The final round of games in the group phase of this year's Fitzgibbon Cup took place earlier this week with plenty of Tipperary interest involved once again.
Wednesday night last SETU Waterford came out on top to qualify from Group A in a winner takes all clash against MTU Cork on a 1-19 to 0-20 score line.
In the second Wednesday night match, Barry Kehoe (Kilsheelan Kilcash) started the game at corner forward but struggled to influence the game and was replaced at half time by county man Paddy Creedon (Thurles Sarsfields), who also struggled to influence the game in the second half.
In Group B, SETU Carlow went down in a close match against DCU who goaled their way to victory with a 3-14 to 1-19 win. There were no Tipperary players involved in this game.
An already qualified UCC topped Group C with a win over UCD in Belfield in the first game last Thursday night, pulling away late on to record a 0-19 to 0-13 victory. Again, there were no Tipperary players involved in this game.
There were plenty of Tipperary players involved in the final match of the round in Group D, as TUS Midwest went out of this year's competition, losing out to ATU Galway in Limerick by 2-21 to 1-18.
The Limerick college were well in the game in the second half but four points in a row towards the end of the game from ATU Galway ended their chances.
There was a big scoring contribution from Tipperary players Kyle Shelly (Moycarkey Borris, 0-4, 0-3f), Evan Fitzpatrick (Roscrea, 0-3), Alan Tynan (Roscrea, 0-2), and Kevin McCarthy (Toomevara, 0-1), while Darragh Tynan (Roscrea), Ger Grant (Upperchurch Drombane), and Brian Óg O'Dwyer (Rosegreen) all started the game.
Gearoid Ryan of Cappawhite also made a substitute appearance off the bench with ten minutes to go in the game.
The conclusion of the group stages now has the competition moving to the quarter final stages with the draw below. The games will be on the 8/9 of February next.
