Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup - Round 2 - Group B
University of Limerick 2-30
TUS Midwest 1-14
The University of Limerick continued to show their ability as they made little of TUS Midwest in the Limerick derby held in Maguire's Field, UL on Wednesday night.
To say this was a one-sided game is an understatement as the game felt like it was over within the first 18 minutes as UL took control and raced into a 0-11 to 0-3 lead and looked like they were hurling in an exhibition game with some of the play they produced.
Chasing three Fitzgibbon titles in a row, the Limerick University are in incredible form and will be a very tough proposition going forward with Mark Rodgers, Adam English, Colin Coughlan, and Sean O'Hanlon all impressing hugely during the contest.
UL were represented by a sole starter in the form of Tipperary senior hurler Gearoid O'Connor who played well for the Wolves, hitting 0-10 in the game with four of those coming from play as the Moyne Templetuohy man played well at centre forward.
They also had a Max Hackett (Moycarkey Borris), Conor O'Dwyer (Cashel King Cormacs), Michael Corcoran (Silvermines), Conor Cadell (JK Brackens), and Conal Moran (Shannon Rovers) who were all unused substitutes on the night.
TUS Midwest had a huge Tipperary contingent starting the game and were best served by Eoghan Connolly (Cashel King Cormacs) who hit 0-2 from wingback, while Kyle Shelly (Moycarkey Borris) hit 0-8 from placed balls. Kian O'Kelly (Kilruane MacDonaghs) managed to raise a green flag in the middle of the second half after Sean Kenneally's (Moneygall) goalbound effort was well saved.
Starters from Tipp for TUS Midwest also included Enda Dunphy (St Marys), Tom Duggan (Lorrha), Cian O'Dwyer (Clonakenny), Gearoid Ryan (Cappawhite), while Jack Ryan (Drom & Inch) came on as a substitute early in the second half.
UL are now safely through and top the group, while TUS Midwest have to beat ATU Galway next week to book a last-eight spot.
