This week marked the end of an era at Kilruane National School as Gilbert Williams took his final coaching session with the students - quietly wrapping up a contribution to local sport and education that has lasted more than five decades.

Gilbert began teaching in Kilruane 50 years ago. Throughout that time, and even after retirement, he continued to give up his own time every Thursday to coach hurling and football at the school.
His sessions introduced generations of boys and girls to Gaelic games and laid the foundations for many to continue playing with local clubs.
To mark the occasion, staff and pupils organised a low-key send-off. Students formed a guard of honour, and a cake with “Thank You Gilbert” written on it was presented in appreciation of his time and commitment.
The moment was captured and shared online by Kilruane MacDonaghs GAA & Camogie Club — without Gilbert’s knowledge.
“Thank you Gilbert for your dedication to the school and for giving so many boys and girls their first introduction to Gaelic games,” the club wrote. “Míle buíochas Gilbert.”
