Newport's Sharlene Mawdsley came up just short in her 400m semi-final at the World Athletics Championship, finishing eighth in the third race of the event in Tokyo.
Mawdsley had an outside chance of making a final but needed to have the race of her life, and while she did run well for 300m, where she occupied fifth place, she eventually tied up and fell into eighth, crossing the finish line in a time of 51:22, falling well short of her personal best.
It was an incredibly fast race with American athlete Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone winning with a blistering time of 48:30.
