Loughmore Castleiney 3-8

Silvermines 2-5

Loughmore Castleiney produced their best in the last quarter when they outscored Mines 2-3 to 0-1 to see them over the line despite the best that a strong Silvermines side could through at them when the teams met in the B final staged in the outside field at Holycross last Saturday at noon.

The supporters that stood on the perimeter of the field enjoyed a well contested tie that escaped the heavy showers that fell before the throw in.

Silvermines started best when the excellent Sean Sherlock had pointed two frees by the eight minute. Points Kyle Kelly and Killian Cleary (65) had scores level by the tenth. Both players were immense. Ollie Morris was another and he gave Loughmore the lead soon after before Conor Harrington levelled for the second time.

As both teams continued to press it was Loughmore who were the more profitable and after points by Tomas Kennedy and Killian Cleary they had the game’s opening goal seconds before half time when Kyle Kelly availed of a defensive error. Half time score Loughmore Castleiney 1-5 Silvermines 0-3.

Silvermines had the perfect start to the second half when Archie Walsh had the Loughmore net shaking inside 45 seconds.

There was more to come as half time substitute Liam Treacy had another goal and when Cormac O’Shaughnessy added a free the North champions were back in front 2-4 to 1-5 with eight minutes of second half elapsed.

But Loughmore were not going away. Killian Cleary was their dominant figure around half way and his long range point aided by another from Kyle Kelly had the Mid champions level 1-7 to 2-4 by the 12th minute.

Three minutes later a long delivery by the stylish Sean McGrath deceived the Mines cover as it dropped into the net. Sixty seconds later Kyle Kelly had doubled his goal count and suddenly Loughmore were in the driving seat.

They remaining ten minutes were devoid of scores as the Mines went on an all out attack only to be rebuked by a well organised Loughmore backline with Dan Sherlock’s free the only white flag raised s Loughmore held on.
