According to reports, as many as 20 trainees could see their start dates pushed back due to hold-ups in background checks.

Tensions flared in the Dáil as Sinn Féin pressed for answers on whether some Garda recruits might face unexpected delays before joining the force next week.

A total of 170 new recruits are expected to graduate from the Garda College in Templemore.
