Thurles Sarsfields 1-19

Silvermines 2-5

The meeting of Silvermines and Thurles Sarsfields got off to a blistering start with both sides attacking with intensity leaving the sides level two points a piece after seven minutes.

The Silvermines scores came from Ellen Cunneen and Sarah Madden. Diaster struck from Thurles when a Ellen Cunneen free deflected off a Sars defender hurley and finished to the back of the net to give the home side a real boost.

The Thurles response was good though and led by Karen Kennedy at centre back and Laura Loughnane on the wing they soon began to click. Aoife Dwyer and Sarah Stakelum steadied the ship with some great scores from play and frees.

In the 21st minute Karen Kennedy stormed up the field assisted by her sister Emer and finished to the back of the net to put Thurles into the ascendancy.

However Ellen Cunneen then struck for a goal at the other end and points from Elaine Murphy and Ciara Ryan meant only one point separated the sides at the break with Sars in the lead 2-3 to 1-7.

Thurles found another gear in the second half and with greater work and determination soon began to dominate. Ciara Cummins and Nicola Loughnane at mid field worked tirelessly and Andrea Loughnane went from strength to strength scoring point after point from play.

At the opposite end the backs were rock solid and limited Silvermines to just two points. Karen Kennedy’s influence on the game grew as the second half progressed while up front Aoife Dwyer and Andrea Loughnane were excellent.

For Silvermines Aisling Carey and Nicola Butler were the standout performers on the day.
