Beautiful Emly competed well on the European stage recently, placing sixth in the European Energy Neighbourhoods competition.

The picturesque village in west Tipperary represented Ireland in the competition, which featured 16 countries, including Sweden, United Kingdom, Germany, France and Austria. The overall winners were from Greece.

Emly, represented by their tidy towns committee emerged winners in May of a national energy saving competition ran by the Tipperary Energy Agency. They beat communities in Cork, Waterford and Galway, all vying to become Ireland’s most energy-efficient neighbourhood. The Emly householders managed to decrease their energy consumption by 37%. “They set a great example to every household in Ireland, that by making some simple changes, they can make such a difference and make massive savings in money,” said Mr Carragher. Some of the ways they reduced energy simply included not using their dishwasher and tumble dryers and not filling the electric kettle.
