Mayor of the Clonmel/Cahir Borough District Cllr. Andy Moloney travelled to Reading recently to meet with members of the Irish Centre and turn on the Christmas lights in an effort to strengthen the relationship between the twin towns.
Invited by Mayor of Reading Mohammed Ayub, Mayor Moloney’s trip consisted of a meeting in the civic offices with representatives from Düsseldorf, Barbados and San Francisco. He turned on the Christmas lights with the help of Mayor Ayub and Hollyoaks Jennifer Metcalfe (plays Mercedes McQueen) and Ayden Callaghan (played Joe Roscoe until recently). He briefly paid a visit to Reading FC, an academy which has a good relationship with Irish players and is also the home ground to the London Irish rugby team.
He met with those in Reading Irish Centre who have been living in the United Kingdom for over 60 years, some of whom have never been home, before visiting the Hibernian Club upstairs which is a safe haven for many to meet and have traditional home cooked food by Anne Morris.
Both mayors were guests at the Barbados 50th anniversary independence celebrations, with Mayor Moloney also attending St.James Catholic Church where he met a full congregation of Irish ex patriots who were delighted to tell their stories and what it means to have an Irish twin town in Reading.
Friendships were made and connections renewed during the enjoyable visit, with Mayor Ayub hoping to visit South Tipperary in 2017.
