Tipperary – key to Ireland’s sustainable future

Wind energy from Tipperary will play a key role in Ireland’s green energy future

In 2024, more than €335,000 was invested in Irish communities by Ørsted and for every new windfarm they set up a new Community Benefit Fund for the local area

At Ørsted our mission statement is wanting a world that runs entirely on green energy.

To date, we have invested in 21 onshore wind and solar projects in Ireland, including five wind farms in Tipperary, powering the equivalent of 250,000 homes nationwide with green energy.

These five wind farms in Tipperary - Mienvee, Garracummer and three phases of operational sites in Lisheen - generate a combined total of 320,800mwh per annum with the potential to power 78,104 of the county’s homes per year.

If Ireland hopes to reach the 80% of energy delivered through renewable resources by 2030 target, wind energy from Tipperary will go a long way in helping us achieve that.

Community Benefit Funding

Renewable projects not only help us reduce our emissions, but they also support the communities in which they operate through Ørsted‘s Community Benefit Fund – which offers funding to a range of local initiatives, from charities to sports clubs.

In 2024, more than €335,000 was invested in Irish communities by Ørsted and for every new windfarm they set up a new Community Benefit Fund for the local area.

Ørsted is dedicated to being an active partner in Tipperary through community supports and to date, Ørsted has provided funding of €449,000 to the Tipperary County Council for local projects in the areas we operate in.

In 2025, local initiatives in Tipperary will have access to over €28,800 through the local community benefit funds. Some previous recipients of funding include Novas, the homeless outreach support service in Thurles.

This vital service used the funds to make improvements in their emergency accommodation and drop-in space.

Tigh Maighne (pictured below), a coffee shop in Moyne, used the funds to transform an old and unused building into a community cafe and shop. This community funding makes a meaningful difference, enhancing essential services and local spaces.

The application process is straightforward; download an application form on Ørsted's website. All proposals for community benefit funding must be received in writing and can be either posted or emailed.

Under Ørsted’s award criteria, we support organisations that engage in community services; energy efficiency and sustainability, educational programmes, and medical and health assistance.

In general, only community projects within a radius of 7-10km of a windfarm are eligible to apply. However, Ørsted will consider applications outside of the 7-10km radius dependent on the windfarm and the distance it is from the nearest towns or villages.

Ørsted is committed to engaging inclusively with the whole community and developing a responsible project that is good for society and for our neighbours.

As part of our plan in Tipperary we want to help bring forward sustainable, long-term community initiatives that meet local priorities, needs and objectives.

As a collective, we can make a legacy in Tipperary, to benefit the environment, economy and communities that will inspire generations to come.
