Jockey Rachael Blackmore, from Killenaule, has been nominated in the Outstanding Achievement category of Horse Racing Ireland 's annual awards.

Rachael Blackmore has been nominated in the Outstanding Achievement category of the Horse Racing Ireland Awards.

The Killenaule jockey has reaped the rewards of her decision to turn professional just over two years ago.

She created history when becoming the first female jockey to be crowned Irish Champion Conditional Rider in the 2016-2017 National Hunt Season.  A fine tally of 32 winners was enough to secure the title.

She was seen to particularly good effect on Ellmarie Holden’s smart chaser Abolitionist, which gave her a memorable success in the €100,000 Grade A Leinster National Handicap Chase at Naas, having also finished second in the Troytown Chase and third in the Irish Grand National.

Rachael also enjoyed a good partnership with the same stable’s smart juvenile hurdler Ex Patriot, with the pair finishing a fine fourth in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham in March.

She gained her first success in the paid ranks when Most Honourable, trained by ‘Shark’ Hanlon, was a winner at Clonmel on September 3rd 2015. Hanlon had also provided Blackmore with her initial success as an amateur rider when Stowaway Pearl won at Thurles on February 10th, 2011.

She rode her first winner on the Flat when taking a conditions' race at Killarney on May 16th last on the Denise O'Shea-trained Supreme Vinnie.

Rachael rode out her claim when winning the Oulart Maiden Hurdle on the Colin Bowe-trained Sweet Home Chicago at Wexford on June 21st last. It was her 60th racecourse success.

The other nominees in the Outstanding Achievement category are fellow jockeys Lisa O’Neill, Padraig Beggy and Jack Kennedy and trainers Pat Kelly and Joseph O'Brien.

The winner will be announced at the Horse Racing Ireland Awards on Tuesday, December 5th at Leopardstown Racecourse.
