Scratch Cup winners at Lakeside: Liam Leahy (Junior), Michael Fennell (Senior) and Martin McCormack (Inter)
Bank Holiday Monday saw our annual scratch cup take place in glorious sunshine with almost 100 people travelling to be part of the action.
Michael Fennell was in the first three-ball out and his 36-hole score of -14 was never headed all day. However he only had a one-stroke lead heading into the final 18 with James Cleary and Kieran Earls breathing down his neck along with the local trio of Brian Cahill, Stephen Shoer and Ronan Loughnane. It mattered little though as Fennell was not to be denied his maiden victory on home soil as he added another 9 birdies to claim gold on -23.
Grandad was at it again in the Intermediate grade as the oldest swinger in town rolled back the years to claim the cup. It was a similar story in the Junior Grade as Liam Leahy also saw off all the young guns to claim the cup for a second time having previously captured it in 2009.
Tullamore's Margaret Hogan claimed the Ladies trophy. The club would also like to thank all those who kindly sponsored prizes on the day. Michael Fennell capped off a fine week by defeating Michael Bourke and Brian Cahill to claim his place at the national matchplay finals in Tullamore which take place on the June Bank Holiday weekend.
On the local front the Limekiln continues while entries are now been taken for the Grey's matchplay. The club are also taking names for a new three person team competition which is designed to encourage lapsed and new members to come and play. Each team must have one registered member and two non members. We encourage every member to make an effort to field a team. Format will be matchplay.
