A fundraising event and a GoFundMe page has been set up by the Tipperary relatives of a girl born in the UK living with a rare eye condition.

The Cycle for Maeve event will be taking place on Saturday May 24, leaving Thurles Rugby Club at 8.30am and then passing through Fethard. The event includes a 150km cycle from Thurles, up and over the Glen of Aherlow and back to Hickeys Thurles.

In April last year Darrah and her fiance Vince welcomed twin girls into the world, Maeve and Orla. The following day, they were told that Maeve was born with a rare eye condition called Bilateral Anophthalmia and will never be able to see.

Darrah is based in Watford, London but has been a regular visitor to Thurles to see friends and family including Darrah’s grandmother , Patsy O’Neill (Ryan Busty Stradovoar) who recently passed away.

Jane Ryan, Suzy and Aisling Scanlon, along with other members of the Thurles branch of the family would like to raise some money to support this wonderful little family.

The girls speak about the fundraising cycle event and appeal to anyone wishing to get involved to contact them.

"Some friends of ours will be taking part in a 150km cycle from Thurles stopping in Christ the King in the Glen of Aherlow. If anyone would like to also take part in the cycle please contact us for the full details.

"Bilateral Anophthalmia is a condition where a baby is born without eyes, it affects 1 in every 100,000 births and can often be associated with other health conditions.

"Her family have a lifelong world of operations and many costs and we would like to make things a little easier for them.

"We have also set up a GoFundMe page to raise money, and we will host an event that night in Hickeys pub with food, music, bucket collection, spot prizes and raffle on the night. Your support would be very much appreciated as we raise funds for Maeve and her lovely family."
