Works have begun along Slievenamon Road in Thurles

Roadworks on the Slievenamon Road in Thurles have gotten underway.

The works are to cause a brief disruption to the regular running of the road outside the Thurles Garda Station, with stop/go stations situated at each entrance point to the roundabout outside Thurles shopping centre.

A spokesperson for the Tipperary County Council clarified that the ongoing roadworks are a temporary measure before greater works will commence on the Slievenamon Road.

“The works being undertaken are ground investigation excavations, and will only take a short number of days. The data form same will be used to inform the detailed design of the main project,” they said.

The works come ahead of Phase 2 of the N62 Slievenamon Road project, which will see works carried out from the roundabout all the way up to Liberty Square.

Construction is due to get underway in 2027.

The scheme, which involves about a half a kilometre of road and is mostly pedestrian and road safety-focused, was given the go-ahead and went through the public consultation process in 2022.

The work is predicted to take 14 months, where the road will be made about 6.5 metres wide, and footpaths to be anything between 1.8 and 2.5 metres.

About 11 parking spaces will be provided on the northbound carriageway between Liberty Square and Thomond/Fianna Road junction.

Another 12 parking spaces will be created at the southern end of the project near Kavanagh Place. Additionally there will be a number of formalised parking spaces provided along the southbound carriageway between Thomond/Fianna Road junction and the Thurles Shopping Centre roundabout.

Existing car parking spaces reserved for Thurles Garda Station will stay where they are, and raised table pedestrian crossings will be provided at the Thomond Road and Kavanagh Place junctions.

Drainage works will also be carried out, and public lighting improved.
