Christmas Operation

Gardaí have introduced a campaign to increase high visibility patrols in the festive period in Tipperary Town.

The patrols began on December 11 and will continue up to Christmas.

An Garda Síochána Tipperary Central Community Engagement is launching the high visibility operation in the lead up to Christmas in Tipperary Town.

A garda spokesperson said the operation will increase garda patrols throughout Tipperary Town between Wednesday and Saturday in the following weeks, targeting anti-social behaviour, drug related crime, aggressive begging and loitering.

Gardaí will be available to promptly deal with offenders in accordance with current legislation, practices and procedures.

This approach was developed in accordance with Tipperary Town community stakeholders. Increased attention will be paid to local businesses and post offices.

Keeping members of the public safe in the busy festive period is our priority said the spokesperson. All mobile units working within the Tipperary Central Community Engagement area are aware of the operation and will provide assistance when required.

Community Engagement Superintendent for Tipperary Central Eddie Golden said there had been a very positive response to the operation in Tipperary Town among the members of the public. “Coming up to Christmas we are just mounting a number of different patrols to create a safe area for people to come and shop and support the local economy and ensure people feel safe while they are doing that,” he said.

Superintendent Golden said that the operation would last a few weeks but confirmed that it would not go into the new year.

“The feedback from the public is that they would like to see more members on the beat on the streets of Tipperary Town,” said Superintendent Golden.

“I had to get a special budget for this operation to get the extra resources. Resources are an issue across the whole country and this operation is being supported by the Chief of the Tipperary/Clare division.

Cllr Annemarie Ryan has welcomed the move and said garda visibility was badly needed on the streets of Tipperary Town.

“An Garda Síochána Tipperary will be on the streets in Tipperary Town in the build up to Christmas. We need garda visibility in our town centre and I’d love to see this rolled out on a regular basis.

“I’ve been calling for this since I got elected in 2019, but unfortunately the Gardaí remain under-resourced and understaffed and it is difficult for them to carry out the beat on the street.

Retail outlets and members of the public have said to me that they are very happy to see a more visible Garda presence in Tipperary town and they would like this to continue. I will keep working with the gardaí to push for more resources for our towns and villages, we all know that increased Garda visibility makes us all feel safer and discourages all types of anti-social behaviour,” said Cllr Ryan.
