Tipperary trails feature in new piece by the Irish Times

The Irish Times has shone a national spotlight on Tipperary’s walking trails this week, with writer Lenny Antonelli featuring several local routes in a two-day trek across the county.

In the article, “Trails of Tipperary: I plan my walk of 35km over two days to finish at my favourite pub”, Antonelli describes setting off from Cloughjordan and following the Beara-Breifne Way, known locally as the Ormond Way, before finishing at the well-known Jim of the Mills pub in Upperchurch.

Along the route, he passes through Toomevara and the rolling countryside of North Tipperary, describing quiet back roads, scenic farmland, and the challenge of navigation where signage is limited.

The piece also name-checks several loop walks around the Upperchurch, Templemore, and Kilcommon areas, including:

  • Eamonn a Chnoic Loops (6.6 km and 7.6 km)
  • Knockalough Loop (8.4 km)
  • Devil’s Bit Loop near Templemore (3.7 km)
  • Kilcommon Pilgrim Loop (6.1 km)

Antonelli praises the landscape and hospitality along the way, particularly his finishing stop at Jim of the Mills, but also notes that parts of the Ormond Way could benefit from better maintenance and clearer markers.

The Irish Times feature is part of a wider series celebrating Ireland’s rural walking routes and local pubs.
