Tipperary champions overturn a five-point half-time deficit in atrocious conditions to defeat Clare's Fergus Rovers and book their place in the provincial decider

Munster Ladies Football Junior A Football Championship Semi-Final

Arravale Rovers 1-13

Fergus Rovers 2-7

Arravale Rovers produced a tremendous second-half performance in atrocious weather conditions to overcome Clare champions Fergus Rovers by four points in a thrilling Munster Ladies Junior Club Football Championship semi-final on Saturday in Lissycasey.

Played in extremely difficult conditions, with a strong wind having a significant influence on proceedings, the contest was very much a game of two halves.

Fergus Rovers enjoyed the advantage of the wind in the opening period and made full use of it to establish a five-point interval lead. However, Arravale Rovers turned the tables after the restart, using the conditions to their advantage while producing some excellent attacking football to secure a memorable victory.

Fergus Rovers made the brighter start, with their influential centre-forward Caoimhe McMahon registering three early points. Arravale responded through a Ciara O’Hora free before Sarah Duggan struck for a goal in the 11th minute, edging the Tipperary champions into a 1-1 to 0-3 lead.

Despite playing against the strong wind, Arravale were competing well, but Fergus Rovers gradually began to make their advantage count.

McMahon brought the sides level with a free shortly after, before Caera McMahon showed brilliant pace and finishing prowess, finding the top corner of the net in the 20th minute to restore the Clare outfit’s advantage.

Further points from the impressive Caoimhe McMahon extended the lead, and by half-time Fergus Rovers held a 1-6 to 1-1 advantage. The McMahons had accounted for all of the Clare side’s scoring during the opening period.

While the five-point deficit left Arravale with considerable work to do, the prospect of playing with the strong wind at their backs in the second half offered the Tipperary champions an opportunity to turn the contest around.

Arravale emerged for the second half with renewed determination and immediately began reducing the deficit.

O’Hora converted a free shortly after the restart, while Molly Price added a point from play. Two further scores from O’Hora brought Arravale to within a point before another converted free from the full-forward levelled matters at 1-6 apiece.

With the wind now in their favour, Arravale began to dominate territory and possession, putting the Fergus Rovers defence under sustained pressure.

The decisive breakthrough arrived in the 54th minute when Lily Maher landed an excellent two-point score from play, putting Arravale ahead by 1-8 to 1-6.

Sophia O’Grady followed with another point, and a further Arravale score extended their advantage to four before McMahon replied for Fergus Rovers.

Crucially, Arravale maintained their composure in the difficult conditions entering the closing stages. O’Hora added two more points from play, substitute Faye O’Dwyer also found the target, and O’Hora converted another free as the Tipperary champions moved into a commanding 1-13 to 1-7 lead.

Fergus Rovers refused to surrender and grabbed a late goal to narrow the margin, but Arravale had already done enough to secure a memorable four-point victory.

O’Hora finished with eight points, including five frees, while Duggan’s first-half goal against the wind proved particularly important in keeping Arravale within striking distance.

Maher’s two-point score was another defining moment, while Price, O’Grady and O’Dwyer made valuable contributions during the second-half recovery.

Although the strong wind was undoubtedly a major factor in the contrasting fortunes of both sides, Arravale deserve enormous credit for the manner in which they adapted to the conditions and capitalised on their opportunities after the interval.

Having battled through a difficult opening half, the Tipperary champions showed tremendous character, patience and attacking quality to overturn the deficit and secure their place in the Munster Junior Club Championship final.
