A devastating scoring burst in the closing ten minutes of the first half proved decisive as Dúrlas Óg claimed the County Tipperary U14A Hurling Championship title with a hard-earned four-point victory over a determined Cappawhite side at Leahy Park, Cashel.
Played in pleasant autumn conditions, the Thurles youngsters were pushed all the way by a game Cappawhite outfit inspired by the outstanding Jesse Julian.
Julian opened the scoring with a second-minute free before Dúrlas Óg joint captain Mason Butler responded from play. Conor Guinan also found the target for the Thurles side, but Julian's accuracy from placed balls kept Cappawhite firmly in contention throughout the opening quarter.
The game's defining period arrived in the closing ten minutes of the first half when Dúrlas Óg outscored their opponents by 1-05 to 0-01.
Daithí Dunne was central to that surge, converting a 17th-minute penalty before adding further points from frees. Jack Quinn and Butler also contributed important scores from play as the Thurles side established a commanding 1-08 to 0-05 interval advantage.
Cappawhite emerged for the second half with renewed determination, and within little more than a minute, Julian had blasted an unstoppable goal into the roof of the Dúrlas Óg net.

Suddenly, a six-point deficit had been reduced to the minimum, 1-08 to 1-07, and Cappawhite had transformed the contest. To their credit, Dúrlas Óg showed tremendous composure when their lead came under serious threat.
Dunne steadied the ship with two converted frees and another point from a placed ball, while Guinan and Daniel O'Grady added valuable scores from play. Operating between the full-forward and half-forward lines, the Cappawhite star was a one-man tour de force throughout. With ten minutes remaining, he struck his second major, cleverly scooping the sliotar over the advancing goalkeeper to reduce the deficit to three points.
