Liam Cahill is set to join a rare group in hurling history this Sunday when he guides Tipperary into the All-Ireland final against Cork.

The Ballingarry man will become just the second person to manage two different counties in an All-Ireland senior hurling decider.

Cahill first reached the final stage with Waterford in 2020, during his debut season at the helm. That campaign, delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ended with defeat to Limerick in the final.

After three seasons with the Déise, Cahill took over his home county, Tipperary, ahead of the 2023 campaign. Now, five years on from that breakthrough with Waterford, he has brought a second county to the sport’s biggest day.

The only other manager to achieve this dual-county feat is Davy Fitzgerald. He guided Waterford to a surprise All-Ireland final appearance in 2008 and, five years later, led his native Clare to the 2013 decider.

In a twist of fate, Clare’s opponents that day were also Cork, and Fitzgerald’s side famously went on to lift the Liam MacCarthy Cup, adding to the one he had already won as a player.
