The Newport athlete Sharlene Mawdsley went 'Instagram official' with Tipperary hurler Michael Breen last weekend

Tipperary sprinter Sharlene Mawdsley clocked a season's best in the women's 400m event at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet in Zagreb, Croatia on Saturday and had a lovely surprise waiting for her back in her room.

The Tipperary athlete ran 51.14 but was pipped at the end as she finished second to Spain’s Paula Sevilla as Sharlene described it as a "race to be happy with" as she was almost one second faster than her run earlier in the week in Savona, Italy.

The Newport native - who got the early flight out of Zagreb in the early hours of Sunday morning after getting very little sleep - was in her first competitive action since going "Instagram official" with Tipperary hurler Michael Breen.

The 26-year-old did so by posting a picture of them on the pitch after the Premier County's Munster Championship win over Waterford on Sunday of last week.

The Tipperary Olympian and sprinter posted a picture with the Tipperary senior hurler from Ballina that sent social media into a frenzy.

And now she's posted another cute picture after she returned to her room following her race in Croatia and found a beautiful red rose had "somehow found its way to my room".

The sprinting season has begun in earnest for the Tipperary athletics star with a "work trip" for Sharlene earlier in the week too where she ran in Italy and shared snaps of the few days.

Sharlene posted the picture of her and Breen with the caption: "Tippin' on."

Many fans were raving about the gold medalist - who posed for pictures with fans - and described her as "such an amazing sporting model for the girls".

After an enthralling game of hurling, it was Liam Cahill's men who booked their place in the All-Ireland series with a 1-30 to 1-21 win.

The 2021 Olympian made her way down to the pitch to join in the celebrations, where she beamed in a picture alongside the Tipperary corner-back.

The Premier County men are not in action this weekend as they await to see if results go their in other games to see if they can reach a Munster Final, either way, Liam Cahill's side are into the All-Ireland series.

Sharlene anchored the mixed 4x400m relay team to a historic gold at the 2024 European Championships and led the women's 4x400m team to a silver medal at the same event.

Next up for the Newport AC athlete is a run in Philly over May 31-June 1, see below:
