The Clonmel Cine Club returns to your screens, in a manner of speaking, this week (Thursday January 10), commencing the first ever season proper of the newly formed film club.
Following three successful test screenings held in the months before Christmas, the club will now screen six wonderful films over the coming Spring/Summer season and will, for the first time, offer a membership scheme which will not only give film lovers great discounts, but will help to ensure that the club has sufficient funds to continue into the future too. The films will be screened in the South Tipperary County Museum on the second Thursday of each month. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 7.30pm sharp!
The new season opens with ‘Monsiur Lazhar’ which tells the story of an Algerian immigrant hired at a Montréal public grade school to replace a popular teacher who died by suicide in her classroom. While helping his students deal with their grief, his own recent loss is revealed.
The Guardian said of this film: “Only the most obstreperous delinquent could fail to be charmed by Monsieur Lazhar, in which an Algerian refugee plays ramshackle Mary Poppins to the kids at a Montreal primary. This sweet, soulful drama plays out to the scrape of desks and the echo of voices, and showcases a glorious performance from Mohamed Fellag as the substitute teacher who is not quite what he claims.
Lazhar gatecrashes the school in the wake of a tragedy. He flounders, he flourishes and is eventually found out. There is just time to deliver one final, moving life lesson before the bell sounds, and the past rolls in to claim him”.
Six month membership of the Clonmel Cine Club will be €30 (for six films) or €7 pay-as-you-go and people can join at the January 10 screening. As usual tea, coffee, treats and a glass of vino can be enjoyed afterwards as film goers become friends!
Screening schedule: January 10 - Monsieur Lazhar; February 14 - To Rome with Love; March 14 - The Giants; April 11 - audience choice (vote between Samsara, Queen of Versaille, or Woody Allen: A Documentary; May 9 - About Elly; and June 13 - Your Sister’s Sister.
