‘The man who nearly lived in three centuries’

At the launch of Macalla, the Comhaltas 1916 Centenery Programme in Brú Ború last week, one of the guests on stage with Minister Heather Humphreys was retired High Court Judge Bryan McMahon.

Chairman of the Board of the Abbey Theatre and son of the late Bryan McMahon, writer and playwright and schoolteacher, Bryan provides a direct link with the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Easter Rising in 1966. His father wrote the spectacular pageant ‘Seven Men Seven Days’ which was first produced in Croke Park, and subsequently in Cloughjordan, birth place of patriot Thomas McDonagh and Cashel.

Readers who have clocked up three score or thereabouts will have memories of the staging of this outstanding production in the Presentation Convent grounds, on the well manicured lawn between the Convent Hall and the glasshouse, now all gone, victims of progress.
