Tipperary Olympian Sharlene Mawdsley says she "fought a good fight" but still has lots to look forward to at the Olympics in Paris.

The Newport AC athlete missed out on a place in the 400m semi-finals after finishing third in her repechage at the Olympics.

In an emotional post on Instagram, she said: "No semi final for me.

"I fought a good fight but I missed out on qualification. Still taking away a little PB from my individual campaign at the Olympics.

"Still got the women’s 4x400m to look forward too.

"As always thank you for all of the love."

Tipperary's Mawdsley ran a 51.18 in the opening run, with just the winner of each repechage automatically qualifying.

The next two fastest also went through to the semis, but Mawdsley's time was quickly overtaken just one heat later.

It was a disappointing conclusion for the 25-year-old, who had finished fourth in her heat on Monday with a personal best time of 50.71.

That time would have been enough to qualify through the heats in any of the other heats.

The Tipperary athlete will have the chance to bounce back in the Women's 4x400m relay, the heats of which take place at 9:40am on Friday.
