Tipperary's Sharlene Mawdsley has made a shock "last minute" announcement and confirmed her return to the Ireland team after taking some time away following her father's sad passing.

In a post on Instagram on Monday night, the Newport AC athlete said: "A last minute decision but I’ll be stepping into the Irish kit again this weekend for the European team championships."

Just days ago, Tipperary senior hurler Michael Breen shared doting pics of partner and Tipperary Olympian Sharlene Mawdsley.

It's not the first time in recent days that Breen has been around for the Olympian's training after he posted another story to Instagram claiming he was carrying out "coaching duties" along with an image of a clearly tired Sharlene sitting on an athletics track.

Mawdsley, 26, has not raced since achieving a season's best in Michael Johnson's Grand Slam Track event in Philadelphia at the start of June.

Her father Thomas died days later on June 3 at the age of 67, with the Tipperary sprinter taking time to mourn before returning to training.

And on Monday, the Paris Olympian confirmed that she will be returning to the track at the European Athletics Team Championships in Slovenia this weekend.

She said: "Happy Olympic day.

"A last minute decision but I’ll be stepping into the Irish kit again this weekend for the European team championships."

At the end of May, Breen shared the first snap of partner Sharlene Mawdsley after the pair went "Instagram official" following the Waterford match in Thurles in the Munster Championship.

The Tipperary senior hurler posted to his stories that their dog "Lola's favourite is back (For one full day)".

Mawdsley has been confirmed for the 4x400m mixed relay, with Cillin Greene, Ciaran Carthy, Sophie Becker, and Callum Baird completing the Irish line-up.

It's been a tough time for Sharlene of late following the sad passing of her father, Thomas "Tucker" Mawdsley.

The Newport native went "Instagram official" with Tipperary hurler Michael Breen earlier this year.

The 26-year-old did so by posting a picture of them on the pitch after the Premier County's Munster Championship win over Waterford.
