BREAKING: HSE inspection at popular Tipperary shop found it selling 'unsafe foods'

Popular Tipperary food store ordered to cease trading following sale of out of date foods

A popular Tipperary food store was ordered to cease certain operations in January following a HSE inspection which found the business to be selling "unsafe foods".

The order was served to O'Connell's Foodstore, located at Main Street, Bansha, county Tipperary, on January 19, 2026.

Following the inspection, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) ordered the Closure Order which directed that:

Part of the activities of the business, its establishments, holdings or other premises be ceased from holding of all foods labelled with 'use by' dates for the purpose of sale or supply. (Note: This notice does not restrict the sale or supply of foods labelled with a 'best before' date).

The inspector found the business was "placing unsafe food on the market", breaching legislations.

Evidence of non-compliance:

  • Cream labelled with ‘use by’ dates of 19/12/25 and 03/01/26
  • Cooked ham labelled with a ‘use by’ date of 07/01/26
  • Back rashers labelled with ‘use by’ dates of 29/12/26 and 10/01/26
  • Sausages labelled with ‘use by’ dates of 14/01/26
  • Milk labelled with a ‘use by’ dates of 15/01/26
  • Black pudding with ‘use by’ dates of 04/01/26
  • White pudding with ‘use by’ dates of 14/12/25

Legislation for Food safety culture (ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements) was also breached as 'Management commitment shall include: ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory requirements'

Evidence of non-compliance

Similar non-compliance with the regulatory requirement that food shall not be placed on the market if it is unsafe, detected during this inspection, was also detected during previous inspections of this premises.
