Carrick-on-Suir’s Réalta Sports Club for children with special needs celebrated its 1st birthday in style by throwing a party for its young members last Saturday.

The club’s members, aged between four and 12 years, were joined at the party at World of Bounce near Carrick-on-Suir by some of their siblings.

Réalta Sports Club has gone from strength to strength since it was officially launched by Special Olympics triple silver medallist Kelley O’Donnell from Carrick-on-Suir at Carrick Davins GAA Club’s astro-turf pitch on August 19 last year.

It finished its first year of twice weekly sports sessions for local children with special needs at the end of June. But the club’s hard working committee has ensured the fun has continued for the children throughout the summer.

In July, the children took part in a dancing and swimming programme at the town’s Sean Kelly Swimming Pool & Sports Centre.

And it has been a busy August. Apart from the 1st birthday bouncy castle fun fest at World of Bounce, the children have enjoyed a trip on the Waterford Suir Valley train based at Kilmeaden, visited Jump Zone and the cinema in Clonmel and are taking part in a cycling training programme at Carrick Davins GAA Club’s astro-turf pitch this week.

The club’s twice weekly sports sessions will resume at the end of September.

Réalta Sports Club Secretary Breda Tobin said indoor sports sessions take place at the Swan GAA Club Juvenile Hall at Greenside on Wednesdays and there are also swimming or dancing sessions organised on Fridays.

There are two to three spaces for new members available in the club’s younger aged group of four to eight-year-olds. Club volunteers won’t know if there is any room for new members in the older nine to 12 years group until the weekly sports sessions resume next month.
