Carrick-on-Suir and the town’s Panduit Carrick Wheelers Cycling Club received special recognition at the St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Brussels last week.

The theme of the Belgian capital’s St Patrick’s Day Parade of the Nations & Regions was the “The Joy of Cycling in Ireland, in Europe and around the World is the Joy of Living”.

Carrick-on-Suir along with Carrick Wheelers CC were honoured at the event on March 16 for their contribution to the sport and as the home of Irish cycling.

A key moment in the celebration was the presentation of the Carrick-on-Suir Shamrock Bowl to the City of Brussels at the Grand-Place as a gesture of friendship and cultural exchange. The bowl was provided by Carrick Wheelers CC.

The ceremony was attended by several distinguished Irish guests, including TD and former MEP Marian Harkin and representatives of the Irish Embassy in Belgium.

Brussels’ St Patrick’s Day celebrations featured marching bands, dancing, hurling displays, and cultural presentations across the city’s landmarks.

“The recognition of Carrick-on-Suir during the festivities highlights the town’s strong international ties and its rich sporting and cultural legacy,” said Carrick Wheelers Cycling Club.

The club and town of Carrick has produced some of Ireland’s top cyclists, most notably Sean Kelly and Sam Bennett.

Back in Carrick-on-Suir, Carrick Wheelers CC members took part in Carrick-on-Suir’s Three County Hinterland Festival parade on March 16 and the Club hosted the Bobby Power Memorial Races on St Patrick’s Day.
