A Tree of Hope was planted on the grounds of Carrick-on-Suir Library to highlight International Overdose Awareness Day.

The tree planting ceremony on August 29 was a project by Suir Valley Community Based Drugs Initiative, in Carrick.
Volunteers from Carrick Men’s Shed, Carrick Lions Club and Carrick Library Community Garden Committee worked together to plant the Red Hawthorn tree close to the Library entrance.

Members of Waterford, South Tipperary Community Youth Service (WSTCYS) also attended the event.

Darren Waters and James Waters of Waters Monumental in Carrick donated a beautifully engraved plaque inscribed with a quote from American poet Emily Dickenson’s famous poem: “Hope” is the thing with feathers”.

It read: “Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches on the soul, and sings the tune without the words, and never stops at all”.

The plaque was placed at the base of the Tree of Hope by Darren Waters.

Gail Sherida, Community Drugs Worker at Suir Valley Community Based Drugs Initiative, spoke of how this beautiful tree will thrive and grow to highlight International Overdose Awareness Day and also acknowledge the lives that have been impacted by substance misuse in the local community.

Suir Valley Community Based Drugs Initiative (Carrick-on-Suir) provides support to people struggling with substance misuse issues, their family members and members of the community affected by substance misuse in Carrick-on-Suir and in communities within a 10-mile radius of the town.
