Thousands of people will gather in Carrick-on-Suir and communities in its hinterland this Saturday evening to witness a fleet of 50 tractors dripping in dazzling fairy lights travel through them.

The 12th annual Christmas Tractors of Carrick-on-Suir Parade will mark the high point of the town’s second Tractors & Tudors Christmas Festival that will take place from 1pm to 8pm on December 13 with many of its events centred around Ormond Castle.

The Crop Cruisers tractor drivers, who organise the tractors parade, are busy covering their mighty vehicles in thousands of Christmas light preparation for the pageant inspired by the famous Christmas television Coca Cola truck advert.

Parade organiser Stuart Downie said they have confined the event to 50 tractors and have a large waiting list of vehicles and drivers ready to step in if there is any cancellations.

The cavalcade of tractors will depart from the Piltown area shortly after 5pm and head to Fiddown, cross the River Suir and travel to Portlaw before heading to Clonea-Power and Rathgormack. The tractors will travel into Carrick via Carrickbeg and are expected to reach the town around 7pm.

The Christmas tractors will cross Dillon Bridge and take the parade’s usual route finishing at New Street Car Park where a BEAT FM street party will take place and visitors can view the illuminated tractors.

A curtain raiser for the parade will be the Kids Christmas Tractor Run that starts at the entrance to Ormond Castle at 5.40pm and will take place around the Castle Park. It's open to children under 12.

The Tractors & Tudors Festival kicks off earlier with a Christmas Craft Market at Ormond Castle starting at 1pm. It will be among a host of festive and cultural events centring around Ormond Castle throughout the day.

Another highlight will be the visit of hundreds of Christmas decorated motorbikes to the town as part of South East Bikers Charity Toy Run. They will park up at the New Street Car Park at 2pm.

The festival is organised by Explore Carrick-on-Suir and Carrick Christmas Tractors, and supported by Carrick Credit Union, Tipperary County Council, the OPW and regional partners.

The full festival programme can be viewed on the Explore Carrick-on-Suir website.
