James Corbally Courtney and Alexy Nesteruk
Pictured above are two pupils from St John the Baptist Boys’ National School in Cashel, James Corbally Courtney and Alexy Nesteruk who recently received awards for having a million reads on the AR programme.
Congratulations to both boys.
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that helps educators manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Children select a book at their independent reading level and read at their individual pace. When finished, the child takes a short quiz on the computer.
AR provides feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help the child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice. Children using AR select their own books to read at an appropriate readability level rather than having one assigned to them. This will create a challenging reading experience without becoming frustrated. This ensures that children can pass the quiz and experience success.
At St John the Baptist Boys’ National School we use AR from 3rd Class to 6th Class
