A popular Tipperary shop is set to close its doors after 100 years of trading.

Raymond Davern of Davern's clothes shop in Cashel is set to retire this year, putting his shop up for sale, bringing an end to 100 years of trading.

The sale of Davern's will be the end of an era which saw the store open 100 years ago on Cashel's Main Street, first opened by Mr Davern's grandmother Mary.

Tributes have been paid on social media, with local councillor Liam Browne saying the sale is "bittersweet".

"Kind of a bittersweet post to write here. Although rumours of Raymie retiring have been swirling about for a while, this is the first "official" confirmation that makes the news a bit real of his imminent retirement and sale of the shop on Main Street," Cllr Browne wrote.

"Raymie, like all of the Davern's is "a good egg". Savvy, smart, but with plenty of wit and good humour, and one to ask now and again for a bit of advice.

"I remember meeting him before and after I was elected last year, and you'd stop for a quick chat and be left with the simple message "do your best and look after people as best you can, you won't go far wrong".. he was right in that," Cllr Browne said.

"Wishing Raymie, Carmel and the rest of his family the very best wishes for the future, and hopefully he'll still be around now and again for a chat and a bit of banter .. enjoy your retirement," he added.

Reacting to the news on social media, Cashel locals also paid tribute to Raymie.

"Bittersweet is the correct description. Very best wishes to both Raymie and Carmel for the coming years," one wrote.

"Happy retirement Raymie, my very first job in 1972, with you're Granny, Mam, and Dad, and ye were all only little Nippers running around, Great memories," another wrote.

"End of an era for Cashel best wishes to Raymond and Carmel and family … Many years of happiness health and making memories in the next stage," another person said.
