The Source Arts Centre celebrates 20 years at the heart of Thurles

The Source Arts Centre in Thurles officially marked a significant milestone this week, Thursday 29th October, celebrating 20 years as a premier cultural hub for the local community and its wider hinterlands. To honour two decades of live music, theatre, comedy, and dance, the centre hosted a live outside broadcast in collaboration with Tipp FM.

The special morning broadcast took listeners on a wonderful trip down memory lane, prompting an influx of warm well-wishes from both on-air guests and listeners tuning in across the county. Opening the show in the "hot seats" were Source Director Brendan Maher and Source Chairperson Cllr William Kennedy. Both spoke about the history of the centre, its impact on the social and economic fabric of Thurles, and their favourite memories spanning twenty years.

Among the standout historical moments, Brendan Maher recalled the legendary performance of global superstar Hozier, who graced the auditorium stage only weeks before his breakout single ‘Take Me to Church’ propelled him to international stardom. The event also highlighted the unique collaborative spirit within the building. Representatives from Thurles Library, which shares the landmark facility with the arts centre, spoke on air about their crucial services and shared new updates within the wider library community.

Rounding off the anniversary celebrations was a rousing tribute from beloved comedian and Thurles native Pat Shortt. As a regular feature on the Source stage, Shortt’s contribution provided a fitting, joyful nod to the creative energy that has defined the venue for two decades.

Reflecting on the successful day, the team at The Source Arts Centre thanked Tipp FM, their audiences, the local community, main funders The Arts Council and Tipperary Cunty Council, and all the great artists and performers who have brought the stage and the Visual Arts Gallery to life with their work. As the celebrations draw to a close, the Centre eagerly looks forward to writing its next chapter.
