What a fantastic, fun-filled, and energetic year it has been for the athletes.   Physical education empowers every pupil regardless of ability to experience success, build confidence, foster friendships, and feel the joy of achievement.

The school offers a diverse range of activities and sports to all pupils on a daily basis. Throughout the day, pupils enjoy a small track and playground to play with their friends and to get some much-needed exercise. At the rear of the school, pupils can also avail of a longer walking area plus two small playing pitches providing additional space for activity and movement.

The Special Olympics programme focuses on six main sports: swimming, athletics, equestrian, kayaking, table tennis, and the Motor Activities Training Programme (MATP). These sports, along with many other school-based activities, help each pupil develop confidence, independence, and perseverance, while fostering discipline and strong friendships.

The impact of sport at Scoil Aonghusa goes far beyond physical exercise. It nurtures personal growth, independence and joy, allowing every child to shine and achieve at their own pace.

The equestrian programme is a well-established and valued part of the PE programme. It takes place every Friday morning at Tomás and Fiona Ryan’s Equestrian Centre in Thurles. We are very grateful for all their support over the years in helping to keep the programme going.

The therapeutic, physical, and emotional benefits of horse riding are limitless.
This year twelve pupils participated in the Munster Special Olympics equestrian competition in the Tipperary Equestrian Centre. Many parents and family members came to support the team. It was a fantastic day of competition, with pupils demonstrating their riding technique, posture, and control of their horse. We have riders from level A to C, starting at walking and progressing to trotting and cantering.

The equestrian programme continues to be a highlight of the school year, offering pupils a unique opportunity to develop confidence, coordination, and a deep connection with the horses. It is a truly enriching experience that brings out the very best in everyone who takes part.

Riding for the Disabled of Ireland (RDAI)
Riding for the Disabled is an association providing riding skills and horse therapy for individuals with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. A group of South Tipperary volunteers who are members of RDAI provide regular riding sessions for a small group of Scoil Aonghusa pupils.
We thank them sincerely for their continued commitment and dedication to the pupils who avail of their wonderful service.
