This town in Tipperary needs 'a divorce from shotgun wedding' says former Mayor

Councillor Niall Dennehy calls for special meeting of Clonmel Borough District to be held

This town in Tipperary needs 'a divorce from shotgun wedding' says former Mayor

The anger at "the state of Clonmel" is universal, says Cllr Niall Dennehy

Clonmel needs to "file divorce proceedings immediately" to leave "the shotgun wedding of 2013 with Nenagh".

That's according to Niall Dennehy, an independent member of Tipperary County Council and Clonmel Borough District.

Cllr Dennehy, a former Mayor of Clonmel, has been a longtime critic of the amalgamation of North and South Tipperary County Councils in 2014, which led to the abolition of corporations and town councils, including Clonmel Borough Council.

"I do not speak for any other councillor, but the anger out there at the state of our capital town (Clonmel) is universal," says Cllr Dennehy.

"I had stated at the January Clonmel Borough District meeting that what we were attending was a sub-committee meeting of Tipperary County Council, and not a Corporation/Borough Council meeting in its own right".

Cllr Dennehy says that the Borough District is "a sub-committee that has no powers and no money".

In correspondence to District Mayor Pat English, Cllr Dennehy says "I am asking you Cathaoirleach, as first citizen, to convene a special meeting of this Clonmel Borough District, not a workshop, with our three TDs and two Senators from this Tipperary South Constituency, as soon as is possible.

"This sub-committee monthly meeting model is not delivering for Clonmel".
