It was with deep emotion and immense gratitude that the community of Gaelscoil Chluain Meala came together recently to bid farewell to their much-loved principal, Karen Mhic Gearailt, who is retiring after 30 years of extraordinary dedication and service.

Is go tromchroíoch a bhailigh an pobal ó Ghaelscoil Chluain Meala le chéile chun slán a fhágáil lena bpríomhoide iontach, Karen Mhic Gearailt, atá ag dul ar scor tar éis 30 bliain de dhíograis agus de dhílseacht don scoil.

Karen first joined Gaelscoil Chluain Meala in 1995, when the school was still in its infancy, operating from just three classrooms.

From those modest beginnings, she helped lay the foundations – both literal and educational – for what the school has become today: a vibrant hub of learning and culture where the Irish language is celebrated and every child is seen, valued and encouraged.

Appointed principal in 2014, Karen may have stepped away from classroom teaching, but she remained a visible and vital presence in every aspect of school life.

Whether it was cheering on school teams, mentoring staff, assisting with student projects or advocating for families, her presence was constant and reassuring.

Students often spoke of how Karen was the first smiling face they saw each morning, welcoming them at the school gate and setting the tone for the day with warmth and positivity.

One of the defining milestones of Karen’s leadership was her role in securing and opening the new school building.

In 2022, she proudly stood alongside guests and community members to celebrate the official opening – a moment three decades in the making, shared with the late Seán Ó Ciardha and many others who had long worked behind the scenes.

The fact that they achieved this during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, despite every conceivable obstacle, speaks volumes about their drive and commitment.

Celebrations were organised by staff, pupils and parents of the school to bid farewell to Karen.

While the occasions marked her upcoming departure, they were also a chance to reflect on the incredible legacy she leaves behind and the immeasurable impact she has had on generations of students and colleagues.

The wider school community gathered in Carey’s Bar for a special celebration. Deputy Principal, Caoimhe Uí Mhuirgheasa, spoke movingly about Karen’s three decades of devotion to the Gaelscoil, praising her steadfast belief in every child. “She has been an example to us all — of kindness, strength, fairness, and grá don Ghaeilge,” she said.

Brendan Ferris spoke on behalf of the board of management of the work and the lasting legacy Karen has left for future generations to enjoy and of the culture she has cultivated among the staff, pupils and school community. Brendan also acknowledged the late Seán Carey for his contribution to the gaelscoil as chairperson of the board for the past thirty years, and with whom Karen worked so well to achieve the new school building.

Michele Marshal, Chairperson of the Parents’ Council, reflected on how parents felt reassured knowing their children were in Karen’s care. A bonsai tree was presented to her by the Parents’ Council- a symbol of peace, harmony and luck. The evening concluded with music from Ros Stafford of the Tipperary Ramblers and Múinteoir Pól, adding a joyful soundtrack to the heartfelt farewell.

Karen’s family, her husband Anthony, children Kate, Deirbhile and Áine, and her mother Eileen Flanagan, were warmly welcomed to Gaelscoil Chluain Meala to share in a special school assembly with the school community.

Though Clonmel has long been her home, Karen’s heart has never strayed far from her native Killeagh in Co Cork. In a touching nod to this connection, students performed their own version of the Kingfishr song ‘Killeagh’ which told the story of their principal’s move from Cork to Clonmel. Senior classes also sang Amhrán na nGael, a favourite of Karen’s, while the whole school later took part in a lively performance of “Damhsa an Dreoilín” with their retiring principal.

Many former pupils who have gone on to achieve great things have been warmly welcomed back to their primary school over the years, and Karen was always their biggest cheerleader. And in a perfect full-circle moment, Karen — known for her creative welcomes and body percussion routines for school visitors — was herself treated to a rhythmic tribute by the students.

In a touching moment, the school reflected on how Karen’s journey wasn’t one she took alone. Over the years, her sister Múinteoir Gráinne and children all spent time at the school, with daughter Áine returning this year as a staff member, ensuring that Karen’s legacy connection to Gaelscoil Chluain Meala will continue for decades to come.

Another highlight of the morning was a slideshow featuring a photo taken by John D. Kelly, showing Karen surrounded by seven current staff members who were once her pupils, a powerful image that captured the essence of her lasting impact.

Deputy Principal Caoimhe Uí Mhuirgheasa summed it up best:

“For thirty years, Karen has been a daily example to our students — someone who believed in every child, nurtured their potential, and guided them with care and compassion. Her legacy lives on in every corner of our school, in every pupil she’s taught, and in every teacher she’s inspired”.

The morning ended with a surprise video message from over 100 of the school’s past pupils, all wishing her well in this new chapter of life.

“Go dtuga an scor duit sos tuillte, spraoi gan strus, agus cuimhní sona nua”.

May your retirement bring you well-earned rest, joy without stress, and wonderful new memories, Karen.
