The potential exists for at least 1,000 houses to be built in Clonmel within the next four to five years.
That was the claim made by Cllr Tom Acheson, following the sale of a 20-acre site for housing for €4.5 million in the town.
The site is located on the Cashel Road on the opposite side of the road from the medical devices plants Boston Scientific and Abbott Vascular.
Cllr Acheson stated at a meeting of Clonmel Borough District that the land, which is zoned for residential use, had been sold at a public auction.

He said the auction had been attended by a number of national developers who were interested in building houses in the town.
It’s understood that there were four bidders and that the site was purchased by well-known Wexford builder Liam Neville Developments.

Cllr Acheson said that his Fine Gael colleague, Cllr John FitzGerald, was one of the auctioneers involved in the sale, along with REA Stokes and Quirke.
Cllr Acheson acknowledged it was frustrating for those on the housing list, or who were waiting to build houses. However, he said that with the work going on around Clonmel, house-building would happen.
The Mayor Pat English welcomed the news, although he said they had heard similar announcements about house-building in the past.
Cllr Siobhán Ambrose said that such news gave hope to those who were waiting for their forever home. It was great that so many developers were waiting to build houses.
