WOW: The Ursuline Thurles reveal their ten Junk Kouture entries for 2023

The Ursuline Thurles submit ten Junk Kouture entries for 2023

The ten Junk Kouture creations for 2023 at the Ursuline as well as last year’s winner

The ten TY Junk Kouture entries for 2023 have now submitted photoshoots of their designs, have completed their application forms and are waiting to hear if they have qualified for the South EastRegional Final.

They will all showcase their creations at the Ursuline Fashion Show on Saturday, March 4, a fundraiser organised by the Parents’ Council.

This will be an exciting runway opportunity for the Junk Kouture models and good preparation for those who, hopefully, make it to the next round.

The students made their outfits from an array of old and discarded items – boxing bags, curtains, broken jewellery, thrown-away Electric Picnic tents, faded denim, trampoline parts, chicken wire, peat moss, piano keys, a broken violin, coffee capsules, copper wire, aluminium cans, Shien bags, lotto tickets, wire hangers and so much more.

The inspiration for their bespoke fashions came from fairy tales and mythology, peat bogs and films.

In their designs, they wish to raise awareness about many important issues, such as climate change, domestic abuse, female empowerment, the pressures on young people today and the importance of having a positive outlook in life.

Once their submissions had been made they paraded their hard work in front of the whole school and their parents in a special school preview.

Everyone loved seeing the flamboyant, the pretty, the tough and the edgy clothes made from rubbish.

Best of luck to all the students entering Junk Kouture 2023.

They are hoping they can go as far in the competition as last year’s Ursuline entrant Genevieve Keane, who represented Ireland at the World Junk Kouture Final in Abu Dhabi in January with her Celtic-inspired dress “Acantha”.

An entry that brought home the Culture Award.
