Cashel residents are alarmed at the escalation of stone throwing incidents at cars
Fears are growing that an escalation in incidents of stone-throwing at cars and pedestrians in Cashel will result in serious injury.
Last week at Junction 8 of the M8 in Cashel, on the slip road from Cashel onto the main Dublin Road, rocks were thrown at and shattered the windscreen of a car, forcing the driver off the road, leaving her shaken and frightened.
The incident happened in the early afternoon. There are also reports of ball bearings being fired from a slingshot towards cars and pedestrians coming in and out of the McDonald’s outlet and the petrol station at the Junction.
Earlier this week, a young man working in the area had to attend hospital and received stitches after being hit by stones fired from a slingshot.
Both matters were reported to the gardaí. Community activist, Liam Browne, is calling on local gardaí to intervene and to apply the full force of the law on those involved, to ensure the safety of drivers, passengers and pedestrians.
“I drive the route daily to and from Cashel and Rosegreen, and also when using the motorway, as do other members of my family, along with most of the community in Cashel, and we cannot wait for a disaster to happen, before action is taken.
“The gardaí do a great job, and have enough to do already, than to have to deal with incidents like this. However, safety is of the utmost importance. This behaviour will have to stop, before we see a tragedy taking place,” said Liam Browne.
He said there was a fear now and people were scared that serious injuries would take place unless something is done to tackle the behaviour and get those engaging in such behaviour to stop.
“There should be CCTV placed in the area. There has to be a multi-agency approach to this,” insisted Liam He said that the man injured after stones were fired from a slingshot was working at McDonalds.
“This man suffered injuries, he had to get stitches. People should not be afraid to walk into work. Something has to be done very quickly to bring a stop to this type of behaviour,” he said.
