David Power looks on and rues a missed opportunity for Tipperary during Saturday’s win over Waterford
Tipperary football manager, David Power, was, for the most part, satisfied with his side’s performance against Waterford on Saturday last at Páirc Uí Chaoimh, even if the win was ultimately to prove of no use in keeping Tipperary in the running for the 2023 Tailteann Cup.
Commenting to the press after the game he said:
“I thought we played a bit better than we did in the Munster championship, I thought we were more controlled. The disappointing thing was that we conceded 1-2 just before half-time and that left them back in the game. And then they got two or three points after half-time (four in the first eight minutes, in fact) but the lads fought back. I thought we were the better team and I thought we were better than one-point winners. There were certain things that we did there today that we didn’t do up to this. We got the point (a Jack Kennedy free) just before half-time to break their momentum and we haven’t been doing that all year, and also I thought we controlled the game a lot better,” said the Tipp boss.
There were some aspects of the performance that pleased him more than others.
“I thought some of the young fellows were outstanding. I thought James Morris (Commercials) was really positive and Darragh Brennan (Ballyporeen) kicked two or three points. I thought Jack Kennedy was immense, really, really good. I thought Conal Kennedy was breaking the line, something we were missing in the league. So there were a lot of positives,” he added.
Finishing the year with a win was the big thing for all involved.
“The win was important. We knew with the score difference it was never going to be, with our confidence so low. Twenty minutes into the game I thought we might start eating into the score difference but the big thing for us today was to get that win. The big thing was to finish with a win no matter what and I think we can build on that. We are after using a load of young fellows this year, even young Jack Nevin (JK Brackens), he was a sub there today. We just have to keep with it and be positive. This year, it has been tough at times, but we have 34, 35 fellows training every night. We have lost a lot of key Tipperary football players, you are talking about the best ever probably produced in Tipperary,” added David Power, who has now completed his fourth year at the helm of the ship.
Briefly reflecting on the past and perhaps looking ahead also, the Tipp manager went on to say:
“I always keep going back to the Longford game, I think if we had got that win against Longford, even though I know we got a draw, if we got that win against Longford it could have pushed us on. I think the big thing is to bring on the youth that is there and you might get one or two more experienced players back next,” he added.
When asked what’s the plan for the summer now, he answered:
“To take a couple of weeks. I am after having a very hard couple of months now personally. I will talk to the County Board and the Football Board over the next while and we will take it from there then. We will have a look at it over the next couple of weeks and we will make the decision then. I have another year left on my term but we will talk to the County Board and the Football Board and we will take it from there,” added Tipperary’s most successful football manager ever.
