There is no doubt about it, this weekend in Thurles rocked. The second Liberty Music Festival ran from Saturday, July 8 to Sunday, July 9, in Thurles Town Park.

Crowds came from all over Ireland and the UK in campervans, from town and with children in-toe. The tribute band festival sold out in March at 4,800 tickets.

On Saturday, festival-goers were treated to Jason Highes and the IGB band (Garth Brooks) Complete Madness (Madness), Guns Reloaded (Guns and Roses) and Waterloo (Abba) and Coldplace (Coldplay).

Sunday began with Elvis act Liam Murphy, Glory Days (Bruce Springsteen), and Dezperado (Eagles).

There was a touching tribute photo compilation to local music legend and last year’s festival MC the late David ‘Sully’ O’Sullivan, who passed away earlier this year.

Qween were magnificent. Lead singer Brian Keville’s Freddie energy was a moment all on its own.

European Supergroup Spring Break saw out the weekend with everyone’s favourites from the 80s and 90s and inviting one family on stage.

One of the singers even broke out the tin whistle for an extra special Irish touch.

A special mention should go to the event stewards and security who not only kept everyone safe but kept the crowd going all day long.

And if you missed this weekend’s event, the live stream is available on libertymusicfestival.ie.

The festival committee is chaired by Thurles councillor Jim Ryan.

At this week’s Tipperary County Council plenary meeting, his colleague Cllr Seamus Hanafin congratulated him on a successful festival.

“It was a hugely successful festival, and it showed off our town park in the best possible way. Jim and everyone involved are to be congratulated. It was a great weekend,” said Cllr Hanafin.

The councillor went on to say that one attendee said they knew it was a festival because it rained and “by God did it rain”.

But where would you be on a summer weekend if not out dancing in the rain?

And by God did they dance, flower crowns and all.
