Tipperary Town has been plaqued by traffic issues for years and it is affecting those living and working in the town in a major way
A passionate appeal to reinstate a yellow box outside the side entrance to Heffernans on Kickham Street in Tipperary town was made at this month's Tipperary/Cahir/Cashel Municipal District meeting.
The box was not reinstated after works on the Kickham Plaza and the one way system on Kickham Street, so Councillor Crosse raised the motion at this month’s Tipperary/Cahir/Cashel Municipal District meeting.
Councillor Crosse pointed out that the one way system had worked well and he was delighted with it, like everybody else, however there was an issue as it is a very busy corner he said.
"It is one of the busiest corners in Tipperary town," he said before adding "the amount of pallets that go in and out that door where I'm looking for the yellow box to be reinstated is daily. It is a huge obstruction to how they carry out their business."
"Mr. Binman comes on there in the morning to bring out the rubbish from the unit and the whole place is locked up.
"Mr.Binman has to go away and leave the stuff after him. They are calling the owners and the owners are shaking their heads.
"It is a problem that there isn't a facility for the flow of business," he said.
Cllr Cross pointed out that this issue was ongoing:
"The man that owned this business passed away just a year ago this week. I visited him just before he passed away. He knew he only had days to live. It was the last thing he asked me before he passed away. He said 'John, try and get that box reinstated.'"
Cllr Crosse pointed out that the family needed closure on this:
"It is very emotional for the family that is left behind. They recently won an award, a national award, as the best carry-out in the country and this is the treatment they are getting.
"They feel very aggrieved over it, they feel very sore and the reply I note there is that 'we don't put yellow boxes outside private property'.
He pointed out to the meeting that there were solutions to the ongoing issue in the town:
"There are a lot of boxes outside private property all over the town that are not being used and I said to you, if you want to sacrifice one of them in the proper procedure - if you had to take one away to give one back - I'm sure that could be facilitated.
“There are yellow boxes outside old commercial businesses that are not commercial anymore. This is a vibrant commercial, multi-million euro business that is being treated in a very shabby way.”
Councillor Fitzgerald seconded the motion while Councillor Ryan also spoke on the matter:
"It is a working commercial business and they need access.”
However the Council responded to say that yellow boxes are only put in to aid traffic flow, and that they could not see a yellow box there previously after reviewing google maps footage.
Councillor Burgess then weighed in on the discussion asking "why couldn't a keep-clear box go in?" and put forth that it is a rate paying business and there was a decent motive behind it.
Cllr Crosse then said "I brought the motion with a heavy heart," before adding that the family feel let down and he feels let down as well.
"We took a leap of faith on that particular one-way system. It has worked well and we are delighted with it but that is the only outstanding issue I have," he finished.
Councillor Michael Fitzgerald pleaded too: "If anything could be done to facilitate the family in whatever way we can, whether it is yellow or it is white, to give them the facility that they had in the past, we should."
