McKevitt's Costcutter on Liberty Square
McKevitts on Liberty Square is coming under new ownership, but jobs at the store are safe, the Tipperary Star understands.
Recent speculation about the change has led to locals raising concerns about the 16 people currently employed at the shop
JOBS SECURE
A source close to the development told the Tipperary Star that McKevitts is changing hands, but that will not mean job losses.
“The jobs are secure.
“The staff will have them, you know, as long as they want them,” the source said.
The store is to come under the Londis brand and will be “revamped” in the New Year.
The source said that McKevitts is an important landmark in Thurles, and the family have been very good to the town. The store was previously known as Johnstons and first became a grocery superstore in 1780s.
The source we spoke to believes McKevitts to be one of the oldest supermarkets in the country.
They said it is unusual that it never changed its purpose and continues today to serve the community in Thurles and its hinterland.
The supermarket is currently under the brand of Costcutters, and after it is rebranded next year, it will remain under the management of Aidan and Aileen Flynn.
