LATEST: Essential car park in Thurles saved from closure

Munster Hotel, Thurles

The Munster Hotel car park is to remain open for public use for the next 12 months.

Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill announced the extension, saying the “positive news for Thurles” was the result of discussions between himself, the owner and Tipperary County Council.

“I am delighted to confirm that we have secured the continued operations of the car park at the Munster Hotel for another year.

“There had been a lot of public concern in recent weeks and days that the car park would be closed and that the public would lose access to it. This car park is particularly important to the area of Thurles town that it services, especially for school buses and those attending mass in the Cathedral.

“I have been involved in discussions between the county council and the owner of the car park for an extended period of time now and I am pleased to confirm that an agreement has been reached that will ensure the car park remains in operation from March 1, 2024 to March 1 2025.

A spokesperson for Tipperary County Council confirmed to Tipperarylive that they have accepted the extension offer.

"I can confirm that the owner of the Munster Hotel car park yesterday offered Tipperary County Council a one-year lease from March 1 2024 to 1st March 1, 2025, at the existing terms.

“Tipperary County Council has accepted those terms and is now in the process of arranging for a lease to be drawn up through our Property Section and forwarded to the owner for signing.

“The car park is open to the public. We appreciate the time and effort invested in the negotiation process by all parties,” said the spokesperson.

To Buy or Not to Buy

Deputy Cahill said he hopes the public access to the car park will become permanent.

“Over the next twelve months, I will be working hard to push for the Council to purchase both the Munster Hotel and car park for public use. I want to see this large, vacant building in our town brought back into use, ideally for the provision of student accommodation.
“This is good news today for Thurles and I will continue to work on future positive developments at this site,” said Mr Cahill.

Councillors at last month’s sitting for the Thurles-Templemore Municipal District Council indicated that they would support the purchase site.

They said they believed it would be good for the town for the local authority to bring the hotel back into use.
