Tipperary motorists have been urged to take part in a road safety review
Alan Moynihan, the Social Democrats Local Election Candidate for Cahir, has encouraged
people to take part in the Road Safety Authority (RSA) review.
The Department of Transport is conducting this review to inform the RSA’s future structure
and operation and is seeking submissions from the public.
Alan Moynihan said:
“I would encourage people to take part in this public consultation as it’s time for a renewed
focus on our road safety strategy and implementation.
“Ireland was among a minority of EU countries where road deaths increased last year, with a
19% rise on 2022. In total, 184 people lost their lives on our roads last year. Tipperary was
the worst affected county with 16 fatalities in 2023.
“Clearly, this is not a time for complacency. A major intervention is now required to prevent
these avoidable deaths and spare the suffering of more families and communities.
“Ireland was once a leader in reducing road deaths and now we are rapidly heading in the
other direction, with road deaths 33% higher than they were in 2019.
“While this review of the RSA is only a small part of the solution, it does provide the public
with an opportunity to have their voices heard.
“However, we shouldn’t have to await the outcome of the RSA review for this Government to
start implementing obvious measures, such as enhanced road traffic policing and more
alternatives to cars.
“People in Tipperary are disproportionately reliant on private cars because there simply
aren't enough reliable public transport options. This is something the Government could
scale up immediately.”
The RSA review survey can be found on Gov.ie. Submissions must be returned to
RSAreview@transport.gov.ie by Friday, 5th April.
