Ted Boyle, the former Mayor of Clonmel who has passed away, has been described by the current Mayor Michael Murphy as "a great servant of Clonmel, a champion of so many causes and a real positive force in our historic town for so many decades".
Ted, from College Avenue, Clonmel, died at St Anthony’s Unit, Clonmel in the presence of his loving family.
He was a member of Clonmel Corporation from 1980-2004, having been co-opted in 1980.
He was elected as Mayor in 1983, 1986 and 1996, and was elected to South Tipperary County Council in 1991 to represent the five-seat Clonmel Electoral Area.
Outside of politics, he was actively involved in the community. He was the current Chairperson of the the Clonmel Bianconi Twinning Committee and played a very active role in ensuring that Clonmel's links with its twinned towns remained strong.
He had a great interest in greyhounds and was a leading member of the local coursing club.
The Mayor, Michael Murphy, said that he possessed exceptional traits of character, and he considered himself so fortunate to have known the great Ted Boyle.
Meanwhile, Cllr Siobhán Ambrose said "Ted was a great character and loved everything about, as he'd say himself, 'Rare Clonmel'.
"A great outdoors man, Ted loved to walk for miles every day until his illness prevented him from doing so. Ted contributed much to the town during his life as both a politician and latterly through his community involvement".
Ted is survived by his daughter Gráinne, grandsons Ciarán, Diarmuid and Fionn, sisters Breda (Canty) and Sheila (Grace), brother Donal, first cousin John (Kelly), Gráinne’s mother Carmel (Kiely), nephews, nieces, extended family and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended.
His body will repose at Condon's Funeral Parlour, Clonmel on Sunday evening from 5pm to 7pm. Removal on Monday to Ss Peter and Paul’s Church, with funeral Mass on arrival at 1pm.
Those who cannot attend can watch live via the Ss Peter and Paul’s Church livestream service https://www.churchservices.tv/clonmelpeterpaul. Burial will take place afterwards in Grange Cemetery.
