Fethard's new €150,000 public park gets the green light

Planning permission has been granted for Fethard's new proposed €150,000 East Gate public park and work on developing it is expected to begin this summer.   

Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District's elected members approved the Part 8 Planning Application for the project at their monthly meeting. 

The park will be located on a 0.2 hectacres site at Burke Street that is currently derelict. There is a significant slope on the site and a portion of the Medieval town walls runs along the western boundary. 

The Co. Council has obtained funding to develop the park from the Town & Village Renewal Scheme. 

The park will be a new tourism and local amenity in Fethard and will provide public access to a proposed walking trail around the town's ancient walls. An extra benefit will be that the park will provide pedestrian access between Burke Street and Barrack Street.

It's proposed to demolish the facades of two derelict terraced houses on Burke Street to facilitate the creation of the park.  There will be park entrance gates at both Burke Street and Barrack Street and conservation works carried out on the town wall.  

Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District Administrator Martin Nolan told the District monthly meeting that the Council was recommending approval of the Part 8 planning application for the park and that the project proceed.  

He said  the Council received four written submissions in relation to the proposed park during the public consultation phase of the planning process and there weren't any proposed changes to the plan arising from those submissions. 

Mr Nolan said the Council was satisfied the project will not have any negative impact on the built heritage, archaeology, visual amenity and existing residential amenity of this area of Fethard. The Council was also satisfied it complied with the policies and objectives of the 2009 South Tipperary Development Plan.
