Double tragedy on Lough Derg in North Tipperary

Reports are emerging tonight (Wednesday 6 June, 12.30am) that two people have died following separate incidents on Lough Derg in North Tipperary on Tuesday evening.

One casualty was taken from the water near Terryglass while a second body was recovered by sub aqua divers near Portumna. 

It is believed the Terryglass victim may have suffered a heart attack. 

RNLI lifeboats were launched around 6pm on Tuesday. 

Emergency services are currently at the scene. 

Updated: 12.14pm Wednesday June 6: A post mortem is due to be carried out on the body of a man who drowned on the River Shannon above Portumna bridge on Tuesday.

It is understood the man was swimming with friends at Ballyegan around 6pm when he got into difficulties.

His body was recovered at around 10pm at Cappafallagh and brought to Portiuncla Hospital in Ballinalsoe, where the post mortem is due to be carried out this Wednesday. The local coroner has been notified. The man's name has not been released. The operation involved Killaloe Coast Guard, Ballina Search and Rescue and the Coast Guard helicopter from Shannon.

Meanwhile, Lough Derg RNLI was also asked to attend a casualty care incident at Terryglass the same evening. It is believed a local man died from a suspected heart attack after he had been in the water.
