Carrick-on-Suir Town Hall where the meeting of Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District councillors took place last week
A councillor has condemned the appearance of the Glanbia site in Carrickbeg in Carrick-on-Suir as a “dirty eyesore” and urged the county council to do what it can to force the company to make the property “more presentable”.
Carrick-on-Suir Cllr Kieran Bourke strongly criticised the appearance of the Carrickbeg branch of the agribusiness giant, recently rebranded as Tirlán, at the December meeting of Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s councillors in Carrick-on-Suir last Thursday.
He said he will move to propose the site be declared derelict if the company didn’t do anything to improve it next year.
The Fianna Fáil councillor said it was disgraceful that €18m regeneration scheme funding was going to be spent on transforming the appearance of Carrick-on-Suir town centre when there was this “dirty eyesore” on the edge of the River Suir.
“We should do what we can to force Glanbia to spend money to make its buildings more presentable,” he declared.
District Engineer Willie Corby responded that the council was in negotiations with the company in relation to developing a 24-space car park on one side of its property.
He reminded councillors that the local authority has secured Town & Village Renewal Funding to redevelop the Bogfield in Carrickbeg into an amenity area. A design for that project was more or less complete and as part of that they would try to screen off the Glanbia outdoor compound from the river.
Mr Corby asked councillors to bear with the engagement the council was having with the company in relation to the various issues about its Carrickbeg site.
But Cllr Bourke replied that the issues with the site didn’t just arise in the past few months.
Previous council officials based in Carrick had tried to get the company to improve the appearance of its Carrickbeg business and he was really annoyed about it.
“Glanbia need to be pulled in, taken to task to clean up that eyesore... It’s taking from the whole scenic area.
“They are one of the most wealthy companies in Europe and its CEO is resident just a few miles from the town. I wouldn’t be treating them with kid gloves because we want this and that,” he added
