Tipperary junior camogie team taught harsh lesson by Cork in league opener

VERY National Camogie League - Division 2B - Round 1

Tipperary 0-2

Cork 4-20

The Tipperary Junior team suffered a very heavy defeat to a flying Cork team on Saturday in the Cork Camogie grounds.

For the first 20 minutes Tipp were competitive but missed some key scoring opportunities and trailed 0-5 to 0-2, with the scores coming from Claire Stakelum and an Ellen Cunneen free.

From the throw in Cork were focused and moved the ball at a great pace. Then came a killer blow in a 6 minute spell where they struck for three goals from Rose Murphy, Lauren Homan and Cliona Dooley to leave the scoreline 3-6 to 0-2 at half time.

Cork continued to dominate all over the field after the restart and quickly had four

points on the trot. A Lauren Homan goal on the 39th minute further extended their lead and despite Tipp’s best efforts they struggled against a vastly more experienced Cork side who having been beaten in last year’s final will be many people’s favourites for this year’s All-Ireland Intermediate championship.

It was a game that the Tipp management and players will look to quickly forget as they refocus now on Kilkenny this Saturday at home. With a number of key players still out through injury this will be another tough challenge. Best for Tipp in Cork were Claire Stakelum and Clodagh Horgan.
