Hidden Hearing announced it is offering free hearing screenings to Tipperary senior citizens throughout Positive Ageing Week 2012, which takes place next week.
The free hearing screenings will be available at Hidden Hearing’s Cashel hearing clinic located at Cawleys Yard, Feehans Road, Cashel.
It is estimated that hearing loss affects almost a third of Irish people over the age of 60. However despite being one of the most common everyday disabilities facing senior citizens in Ireland, research carried out this year found that 70% of hearing loss sufferers wait over a year to seek help after first noticing a problem with their nearing and nearly a third of patients wait over five years before seeking treatment.
Commenting on the free hearing screenings for Tipperary senior citizens, Hidden Hearing Marketing Manager, Dolores Madden said, “The key issue is that those who initially notice a problem with their hearing do not take action. In our experience at Hidden Hearing, this is particularly the case when it comes to senior citizens. We hope by offering free screenings it will make it easier for senior citizens throughout Ireland to take the first step in tackling their hearing loss.”
Hearing loss is an uncomfortable topic for many of those suffering with the condition. The recent research examining the area found a third of hearing loss patients to be embarrassed by their hearing loss, while a fifth said it made them feel old. Over half of sufferers go to great lengths to hide their condition by pretending to hear what people said to them during conversation.
“Our senior citizens need to be encouraged to value and take care of their hearing. It’s important that if you notice issues with your hearing that you address the problem and take positive action. By providing free hearing screening he hope to encourage people to identify their hearing loss problem early and seek appropriate treatment”, added Ms Madden.
